Bagels and Pierogies: Lenten Family Traditions

Bagels on Ash Wednesday and pierogies on Good Friday bookend our families’ Lenten traditions. I know that Lent is a season of fasting – but our family also loves to use food to weave people together as church and family, “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it” (Hebrews 13:2).  We always keep the fasts during Lent, but we also have our own style in how we do it.

In our family it is all about balance and using hospitality to build our families’ memories, “And how do we keep our balance? That I can tell you in one word: tradition. Because of our traditions we have kept our balance for many years. We have traditions for everything” (Tevye – Fiddler on the Roof).

Joe and Marianne Doman have been blessed by 32 years of marriage and their children Cate, Claire, Drew, Grace, and their son-in law Patrick and now by their grandson Luc. They reside in Hudson, Ohio and serve as Core Members at their home parish.
