Social Media Basics: Filters

Conceptos Básicos de las Redes Sociales: Filtros

You’re scrolling down your Instagram feed and see your kid’s most recent post of them with the family dog. You like the photo, but stare at it for a few seconds thinking, “Hold up, that looks like it was taken in 1992, how did my kid get a hold of a Polaroid?” Unless your teen figured out how to work the flux capacitor you have in your garage, they did not time-travel for a vintage photo op. They used a filter.

What are Filters?

Filters are simple ways to edit video and photo to create the desired appearance, feel, or creative expression. Color-correcting has been around for decades, and as technology improves and becomes more accessible, filters make it easy for everyone with a smartphone and social media to color-correct their content.

Why Use Filters?

So many people have a smartphone these days, and all smartphones come equipped with high-definition cameras. Unless someone has photography as a hobby, all of the pictures they take are from their phone. Even though phones have good cameras, they do not come close to the quality and effects offered to the user through an actual camera. This means that if there is a certain look that the user wants on their photo, and they took it on a phone, they have to edit the photo to get that desired look. That’s where filters come in, and they do a pretty great job.

Instead of carrying your bulky camera with you, taking a picture on your camera, uploading the image to your computer, editing in photoshop, exporting the picture, transferring the picture to your phone, and then posting it on Instagram… whew, that’s a lot of steps just to make a picture of a cute squirrel look good… you can now just use a filter. With filters, you can take a picture of that friendly squirrel in the park on your phone, edit the picture from the comfort of the park bench, post it on Instagram with the caption “Feelin’ like Saint Francis #assisisquirrel”, and be on your way.

Also, they’re free.

There are two different types of filters for social media: photo filters and AR (augmented reality) filters.

AR Filters

Augmented Reality filters are used for videos taken on social media. When a user opens the camera function on Instagram, Snapchat, or Facebook, they are able to use different styles and fun effects while they record a video, which adds some creative motion and amusement to the video. The cool thing about these filters is that they use facial recognition to identify the location of the subject, and is able to customize the filter to fit what the camera sees. These filters can range from a game show zoom with sparkles, to adding dog ears and a tongue to someone’s face. These AR filters are used more for humor than for aesthetic.

Photo Filters

Photo filters are EVERYWHERE. These filters are meant to give the photo a certain look to match the mood of the photo. When taking a photo within Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat, the user can swipe through a variety of filters. Each of these filters highlights different colors and lighting in the photo, which gives the image a unique look for each filter. Many people on social media also use one consistent filter on their profile to make the whole page cohesive. Many people see Instagram as a way to express themselves creatively, and using filters is a great help with that.

Positives to Filters:
Overall, filters are great. Filters make editing photos very convenient and are available on any social media platform where one would post a photo. They are free, which makes photo editing much more accessible. Not everyone wants to pay for Photoshop, and filters are one of the best alternatives. They also give more access to forms of creativity. There is something awesome about seeing an Instagram page where all of the posts mold together into one, well colored, well-edited page.

Negatives to Filters:
If you kept up with our previous Snapchat blog, you know there can be some downsides to filters. Many people have a hard time with self-esteem and turn to social media for validation, whether it is validation in skills, appearance, or accomplishments. Filters can be used to distort their reality, presenting a more “appealing” version of themselves online. This could be saturating a photo of the sunset, thinking, “people will be jealous of the great sunset that I got to see” or using a face filter to bring out facial highlight’s in their selfie.

At the end of the day, filters are amazing tools. For those who cannot afford Photoshop, but still want to practice creativity in visual media, filters are here to save the day.
