Social Media Basics: Instagram Stories

Conceptos Básicos de las Redes Sociales: Instagram Stories

“Wait, say that again!” you might overhear, as your son or daughter pulls their phone out to capture something funny, clever, or embarrassing thing that you, your spouse, or one of their siblings or friends just said, that they plan to share to their Instagram (IG) story.

Instagram story is arguably where teens are most prolifically sharing on social media these days for a number of reasons. If your teens have a smartphone, chances are they’re participating in IG stories to some extent and, while not all bad, it’s important to be tuned into precisely what’s going on there. In order to best understand this platform and your teens’ use of it, let’s take a look at its history, features, and the “why” behind teens’ use of it.

Snap Stories… but Better

Snapchat is where users can send expiring pics or vids directly to friends, but could also share expiring stories with all their followers at one time; and for a while, was the only place people were doing this. When IG introduced its story feature (within its existing app)and all of its subsequent bells and whistles, Snapchat stopped being the sole place for transient posting of this nature and more users started posting this way on IG.

But… What are Stories Anyway?

Essentially, stories are expiring photo posts or videos (no longer than 15-seconds per video) that users can post to their account to share with all of their followers. Once users add an entry to their story, that entry will remain visible to their followers for 24 hours only. When a story is live, the user can see every account that’s viewed their story.

There are a number of additional features that make stories more interactive, individualistic, and community-oriented. Users can add a number of unique filters to their posts to make them fit a desired aesthetic. Users can add text and “paint” on their images or videos as well, in order to further customize them. They can also add fun/funny stickers like animated gifs, run polls for their followers, invite their followers to ask questions and answer them publicly, and tag other users, use hashtags and tag their location. Additionally, if a user wants to make their story accessible by followers for more than 24 hours, they can add it to their “highlights,” which is an archive of old story posts.

Users can respond to stories by sending a direct message, which essentially becomes just another private messaging platform. Users can also send stories to one another; for example, if a musician I follow posts something teasing her new song, I might share that story with a friend who also likes her music – this exchange happens privately. Finally, if users are tagged in other users’ stories, they can share those stories from their stories. It sounds confusing, I know… an example of this would be if I want to show off some of the art being made at Life Teen, I might tag my wildly talented coworker, graphic designer @ryanmcq in my story with a photo of one of his latest designs. If he wants to direct his followers to my story, he can re-post my story to his own.

Instagram live videos are also part of stories and this is exactly what it sounds like – a live stream video from one person’s account, to which all of his or her followers are invited to watch. While live, viewers can send in comments or questions in real time and, at this time, two users can be live at once -essentially public FaceTime or Skype. IG has announced that group video chat will be available soon as well.

Why’s Your Teen Using It?

IG has done a phenomenal job of creating a space for people to post and engage frequently on stories and teens flock to it for a number of reasons:

They’re already there. Teens are already sharing filtered versions of their lives on the app itself in their long-term posts, so they don’t need to download another app (*ahem* Snapchat) to participate.
It disappears – Snapchat caught onto something with it’s disappearing stories: people want to be able to share moments without leaving a permanent mark on their carefully curated images. Because IG stories expire after one day (unless added to highlights), it gives your teens a spot to share something that they want their followers to be aware of, but don’t necessarily want to clog up their feed with. This gives them the ability to share dozens of snippets of a concert or a vacation, sharing those experiences with followers in a moment, without leaving dozens of posts living permanently on their profile… that’s just embarrassing.

They want to be seen and known. This very natural human desire is something that IG has tapped into big time. With stories, teens are not only sharing the highlights of their life with their followers, but they are also keeping a close eye on who of their followers are watching them. They don’t share just to invite others into their experience; they share because they are trying to be seen by the people who follow them.

Ask Your Teen About…

Now that’s a very quick overview of what stories are and, in all honesty, it’s likely that there will be additional developments to stories that have taken place between the time I’m writing this and the time you’re reading this. But, all that considered, there are a few things to be aware of and talk with your teen about regarding IG stories:

Evaluate their privacy settings on stories. If your teen doesn’t limit their IG story privacy at all, that means anytime they use a hashtag or location tag, people searching those tags will be able to see their story and send it to other users. There are obvious safety concerns to that kind of public sharing. I would encourage you to evaluate their follower list, ensure that only people they (and you) know follow them, and be sure that their stories are only accessible by their followers.

Ask them who they’re following. Stories (especially live features) create space for explicit content to be accessed in an instant with no trace. Be sure your teens are following accounts that aren’t exposing them to this kind of content.

Watch their stories. If you have an IG account, follow your teen! This isn’t for the sake of policing, but for the sake of seeing what it is they’re trying to be seen for. Watch their story, but don’t let your communication end there. Talk to them about what they’ve posted, why they post it and affirm the good you see them sharing.

Pregúnteles a quién siguen.
